An update has been announced for the toothbrushing AR game Pokémon Smile, which is to be released later this week. Originally launching in 2020, the game features Pokémon drawn in an adorable chibi art style, and serves to encourage proper teeth cleaning for younger fans of the franchise.
Pokémon Smile is a charming app that turns the toothbrushing experience into a game. Players are tasked with rescuing Pokémon from evil, cavity-causing bacteria through the power of brushing. A successful session will see these Pokémon caught and added to a Pokédex, with the original 151 alongside a few extras currently all available to collect. Alongside other incentives, like the ability to unlock various Pokémon caps, this application of the classic 'Gotta Catch 'em All' goal helps to promote regular and careful brushing. As a result, children are able to have fun while brushing their teeth, which can be a boring activity on its own, and even take some photos featuring some dramatic Pokémon accessories.

Now an update announced for the app by The Pokemon Company's Japanese Twitter account promises to extend the fun by adding an additional 100 Pokémon to Pokémon Smile. Due to be released in Japan on Friday 3 June, details are currently scarce regarding the new additions to Pokémon Smile's Pokédex for version 2.0. However, the teaser image does show several of the new additions, including the Johto Starter trio. This implies that this update will in fact be made up of the Generation 2 Pokémon. This follows a similar, albeit much smaller, update in 2021, in which Smeargle, Dedenne, Mime Jr., and Ludicolo were added to expand the Pokémon AR game's roster.
