The predicted State of Play is taking place this week, but it doesn’t sound like it’s going to feature anything about PlayStation Game Pass.
There have been rumours of a State of Play event in March for months now, with the expectation being that it would be used to announce the PlayStation equivalent of Xbox Game Pass, but that’s suddenly looking less likely.
It’s impossible to rule it out, because as usual the PlayStation Blog announcement didn’t offer many details, but it did say that it will be used to highlight ‘great games coming from some of our beloved Japanese publishers’.
There will also be updates from other developers around the world but there was a warning that there won’t be anything about the PlayStation VR2 or its games.
The State of Play will take place on Wednesday, March 9 at 10pm GMT and will last around 20 minutes, which is on the short side – but Sony does tend to blast through these showcases nowadays, rather than filling them with bloat.
Sony has been heavily criticised for all but ignoring the Japanese games industry since the launch of the PlayStation 5 and many were especially upset when they shuttered their own internal Japan Studio.
The only first party Japanese game to be released, or announced, so far is last week’s Gran Turismo 7 and the PlayStation Blog announcement pointedly says ‘Japanese publishers’, implying that none of the games will be from Sony themselves.
That could well include Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 16, and perhaps the recently delayed Forspoken and Bethesda’s Ghostwire: Tokyo. Hopefully there’ll be some new games too, but that’s not specified.
