Sony is the latest major gaming company to take a firm stance against the invasion of Ukraine by halting the sale of all PlayStation consoles and video games in Russia. PlayStation is far from the only name in gaming that is using its position in the market to protest the war in Ukraine, as several other developers, studios, and distributors have completely cut Russia off from purchasing their products.
Sony, along with Microsoft and Nintendo, is considered to be one of the biggest companies out there when it comes to console gaming. The Japan-based corporation's hold on the gaming industry cannot be understated, as its PlayStation line of home consoles has always sold extremely well. This trend continued with the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, which Sony claims is the fastest-selling console of all time. While this next-gen console is still surprisingly difficult to find thanks to a combination of supply shortages, high demand, and bot-aided scalpers, the PS4, along with its suite of critically acclaimed exclusive titles, continues to sell exceptionally well. This is certain to continue this year with highly anticipated PlayStation releases like God of War: Ragnarok and Forspoken on the horizon.

Russian gamers will likely be missing out on these releases for a while, as the official PlayStation Twitter account announced that the company would be stopping all sales of "software and hardware shipments" in Russia (as covered by CNBC). PlayStation has also pumped the brakes on the sale of its latest high-profile exclusive Gran Turismo 7 in Russian, in addition to disconnecting the PlayStation Store for Russian users.
