Sonic has been in the headlines a lot already in 2022. Between Sonic 2 at the cinema and Sonic Origins coming to all major platforms next month, there has already been a lot for Sonic fans to get excited about. Origins is a collection of the very first Sonic games that first launched on the Sega Mega Drive 30 years ago. A time when all of Sonic's adventures were still two-dimensional. That has got some creative fans thinking about what they would like a 2D Sonic game to look like in the present day.
Pixel artist huttaburger, for example, who created some stunning stills of how a 2D Sonic game might look in 2022 if they were to head up the project. The images show Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy (coincidentally the four characters who will return to the small screen via Origins) in different backdrops, all created in huttaburger's unique style which conjures up memories of Sonic Advance.

That's no accident. While the Sonic games on Game Boy Advance are two decades old at this point, huttaburger told TheGamer they were very much the inspiration behind their reimagining of 2D Sonic. “The inspiration behind the piece was sort of a continuation of the Sonic Advanced style to fit modern-day displays and resolutions,” huttaburger explained. “For the gameplay, I was imagining it also being an evolution of the Advanced series, with new abilities for each character to provide a smoother experience.”
