Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard season 2, episode 6 — «Two of One»
Star Trek: Picard has set events in motion for a sequel to a classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, 29 years after it first aired. Much of Picard season 2 revolves around revisiting and reexamining previous events in the Star Trek timeline. However, with a subtle set-up, episode 6, «Two of One» goes even further in referring explicitly back to one of the original series' most iconic stories.
In “Two of One”, Jean-Luc throws himself in front of Adam Soong's car to ensure that Renée Picard embarks on the Europa mission. Rushed to Teresa’s clinic, he’s in a stable condition but unable to wake up. Lying in a hospital bed, flashes of his memories hint that Jean-Luc is replaying the traumatic events of his childhood in his comatose state.

This set-up recalls the plot of The Next Generation’s sixth season episode “Tapestry”. After a diplomatic mission goes catastrophically wrong, Jean-Luc appears to die when his artificial heart gives out. Awakening in a white void, Picard meets Q, who offers him a chance to survive by changing a key moment from his youth. If Picard avoids being stabbed in a barfight as a young Ensign, his artificial heart won’t short out and leave him dying in the Enterprise sickbay. Given the events of Picard season 2 so far, it feels appropriate for episode 7 to revisit this classic TNG episode.
If there’s an overriding theme of Star Trek: Picard it’s that of making peace with oneself. Season 1 saw Picard come to terms with his own mortality while attempting to redeem himself for Data’s sacrifice, and for the Federation’s abandonment of the Romulans.
