Warning: SPOILERS for Grey's Anatomy season 18 episode 16 ahead.
Grey’s Anatomy season 18 episode 16 highlighted one of Grey Sloan’s oldest and ever-present issues, and by linking it to a possible solution for the hospital’s residency program being on probation, it paved the way for Grey’s Anatomy’s real happy ending. Grey’s Anatomy season 18 framed the Medical Accreditation Council visit following the many complaints about the hospital’s residency program as the main challenge of the season. One specific conversation between Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Kate Walsh’s Addison Montgomery, though, emphasized how overcoming one of Grey Sloan’s oldest mistakes could possibly lead to Grey’s Anatomy truly ending happily.
The approach all Grey Soan’s residents had towards their residency program and what it asked of them was always challenging, although throughout Grey’s Anatomy, nobody seemed to believe complaining could’ve even been an option. However, Grey’s Anatomy season 18 proved that wasn’t the case, as even when all complaints came from Levi Schmitt’s (Jake Borelli) mother, the Medical Accreditation Council took them seriously and investigated the hospital accused of letting its residents be overworked. Still, although the Medical Accreditation Council would’ve probably existed even in the past, nobody even dared to question the teaching system of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and so many other hospitals like it, which fostered a climate of competition between residents and dehumanization of their patients.
