The Simpsons: Hit & Run is getting the open-world remake it deserves through the efforts of a dedicated fan. Hit & Run is a beloved standout amongst the many Simpsons games released over the generations and fans have been clamoring for an official remaster for years, so much so that an official study had named Hit & Run the most requested game remaster among players.
Since debuting in arcades with Konami’s beat ‘em up in 1991, The Simpsons have featured in over 20 video games. While most were notable duds, Radical Entertainment’s The Simpsons: Hit & Run achieved a fair amount of success in its 2003 release. Hit & Run allowed players to explore and drive through a virtual Springfield packed with in-game references and Easter eggs. However, while the GTA-like quickly developed into a cult classic, due to the limited technology of the time, Radical was incapable of making Springfield the same open-world experience and instead broke down sections of the map into self-contained levels.

Recently, YouTuber and game developer Reubs gave fans a peek into what The Simpsons Hit & Run might look like if it were a pure open-world experience. In this video, Reubs details his entire process of importing and remastering all the assets of Hit & Run within Unreal Engine 5. Basing his project on the work of modder Colou’s Simpsons Hit & Run open-world mod, Reubs begins by converting and importing the mod assets right into Unreal Engine. To his surprise, Reubs managed to have a fully explorable unrendered model of Hit & Run’s entire world in less than an hour.
