Ghosts are haunting by nature, and so is the dating phenomenon named after them. And it's one that's isn't going to disappear, according to a dating survey by Myvision.org(Opens in a new window).
In April, the eye-health organization surveyed over 800 Americans about their online dating habits, and some interesting things came to light around ghosting—suddenly ending all communication with no explanation. The majority of those surveyed said someone had stopped responding to their messages or calls after a first date (79%), while 21% experienced it after two to three dates. A small but unfortunate 1% were four to six dates in when their matches disappeared.
Anyone who has been ghosted knows that the worst thing about it is not knowing the reason for it. The survey holds some answers. Nearly three-quarters of survey respondents (73%) said they ghosted because there was no attraction, 49% blamed awful conversation, 46% had a bad date overall, 35% said it was because of annoyance, 22% found their date didn't look like their picture, 8% were just trying to hook up but found that the other person wasn't interested, and 4% just wanted—brace yourself—free drinks and food.
Saddest of all, being subject to the rudeness of no response doesn't stop people from turning into ghosters themselves. Forty-four percent said they'd ghosted someone.
