Though the first movie in the franchise, 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, earned more than $800 million worldwide, the film's follow-up wasn't as successful. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which hit theaters in 2018, received mixed reviews for an overly complicated plot, and the film ultimately earned around $650 million worldwide. Thus, Crimes of Grindelwald had the lowest box office for any live-action film in the Harry Potter canon.
