Most consumers will never think of buying it. But on Tuesday, Nvidia finally launched its most powerful consumer graphics card to date: The RTX 3090 Ti, which starts at a whopping $1,999.
The company is marketing the GPU not to gamers, but to 3D artists and engineers who need a graphics card capable of rendering huge software or video projects. In fact, Nvidia even admits the RTX 3090 Ti is only about 9% faster than the RTX 3090 when it comes to gaming.
The product arrives after Nvidia mysteriously delayed the GPU amid rumors it was suffering from BIOS and hardware issues. The company didn’t explain the delay, but Nvidia did say the RTX 3090 Ti will roll out in limited quantities due to manufacturing troubles in China.
“Please note that general global availability today has been impacted by the latest COVID surge and shutdowns in China, but we expect this to improve throughout April,” the company said.
Still, Nvidia plans on selling a Founders Edition RTX 3090 Ti model at Best Buy. The sale is expected to kick off today, according to a company spokesperson.
The RTX 3090 Ti costs $500 more than the original starting price for the RTX 3090, which first launched back in September 2020. In exchange, buyers get 10,752 CUDA cores, a minor bump up from 10,496 CUDA Cores in the RTX 3090.
The other improvement involves the memory speeds. The product still features 24GB of GDDR6X video memory, but it’s been clocked at a faster 21Gbps, an increase from the 19.5Gbps in the RTX 3090. The extra memory boost means the product can deliver 1TB/s in memory bandwidth, which makes the RTX 3090 Ti ideal for processing massive 3D simulations and data sets, according to Nvidia.
“The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is an artists’ dream and tailored
