As the Switch continues to make strides, Nintendo inches closer to shutting down its 3DS and Wii U storefronts. This week, it revealed if you still have virtual funds to spend on software for either of those consoles once the stores have been shut down, you'll have a full year to transfer them so they can be used on a Switch instead.
The ability to buy games and DLC through the 3DS and Wii U storefronts will end on March 27, 2023. With a little more than a month to go, Nintendo has reminded people who still have funds that they won't be lost forever if they haven't been spent by the cut-off date. As long as they own a Switch or plan on buying one at some point in the next 12 months, that is.

“Until March 2024, you can merge your unused Nintendo eShop balance to your Nintendo Account, so that it can be used on Nintendo Switch,” Nintendo's reminder reads. You will need a Nintendo Network ID, and if you have one already, make sure it's connected to your 3DS or Wii U.
You'll also need a Nintendo account to pair it with. Once combined, you'll be able to spend any 3DS and Wii U store funds you have left on Switch software and DLC. Additional details on how to do all of the above can be found on the Nintendo website.
It seems the 3DS and Wii U stores will not be getting the same treatment as their PS3 and PS Vita equivalents. PlayStation's decision to shut down a few storefronts was met with such a high level of backlash that the decision was reversed. If there are any games you've had your eye on for either console, you'll want to buy them now. If you don't, and you have or plan on buying a Switch, transfer those funds now. You might have a year to do it, but why wait?
