Nicolas Cage's new movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has Cage playing himself, but also runs into the problem that it will have to be even more unbelievable than Cage's real life. Cage has played a countless amount of over-the-top characters throughout his career from snakeskin jacket-wearing Sailor Ripley in David Lynch's Wild At Heart to soft-spoken loner chef in last year's Pig, but his role in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is arguably his most bizarre. Playing a down-on-his-luck version of himself, Cage agrees to attend the birthday party of mysterious fan Javi (Pedro Pascal) for a hefty payday, only to be caught up in an espionage plot involving the CIA.
Cage is no stranger to playing versions of himself. His extreme persona has bled into his acting performances on more than one occasion, and Cage's interest in the occult lent itself perfectly to his roles in movies like Mandy, Prisoners of the Ghostland, and the upcoming Renfield. Cage is an actor who is not afraid to try anything on the screen, but his offscreen exploits are equally insane; he has been in the news for securing his own tomb in New Orleans, buying islands and castles, and most notably allegedly outbidding Leonardo DiCaprio for a 67 million-year-old dinosaur skull which he subsequently had to return because it was initially stolen.
