It’s no surprise to learn that there are more Call of Duty games in the works, but mobile might not be your first guess. That’s exactly what Project Aurora is though, and the mysterious title was just announced. The Call of Duty team has bold plans for it too.
“Our mission with Project Aurora is to bring friends, families, and people around the world together,” the announcement on the Call of Duty blog reads. The team is looking to do that “with a fast-paced, precise, and high-quality battle royale action experience that delivers a fresh new way to play.” Those are some big claims, but select fans won’t have to wait long to test them for themselves. The “first closed gameplay test” is happening now, and those who’ve been personally invited will be able to see it in its alpha state.
The test is not open to the public as such, but the team “couldn’t be more excited” to change that in the future. As the announcement makes clear, there is no release date for the full game — it doesn’t even have an official name yet — but more information will become available as development goes on. The Call of Duty blog “will have many updates and posts” in the future. Call of Duty Mobile is open to everyone in the meantime, and we have reward codes for those who play.
Project Aurora is looking to freshen up the battle royale experience, but it’s not the only Call of Duty project with that goal. Warzone 2 will be “an evolution” of the concept, the devs claim, with larger objectives and extractions. Furthermore, it will be built on an all-new engine — same goes for Modern Warfare 2, the next Call of Duty title. That’s confirmed for a fall release, with Warzone 2 set to launch shortly after.
