Netflix and Japanese anime producers Studio Colorido have signed a three-picture deal that kicks off with the new original movie Drifting Home. Despite Netflix's substantial subscriber loss for Q1 2022, the streaming giant continues to spearhead original content and particularly animation, which has become one of its most celebrated forms of content. Anime is a leading source of the company's success with animated productions and several original series and films such as Ultraman, Beastars, and Hiroyasu Ishida's A Whisker Away receiving critical acclaim.
THR reports that Netflix will affirm its commitment to the medium by re-teaming with Tokyo-based Studio Colorido for three new original anime movies, beginning with Ishida's Drifting Home, written by Hayashi Mori. Netflix Asia shared the trailer yesterday, which shows sixth-grader Kosuke and his friends sneaking into his old — now haunted — apartment building and suddenly finding themselves and the structure drifting in a vast ocean. The three-picture deal is a smart business move considering Netflix's hit TV anime library and popular original films like NiNoKuni and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The company's Director of Japan Content, Yuji Yamano, said, "This partnership extends our growing film slate in Japan, and also adds to our collection of more 'lean-back' and family-friendly stories."
