Netflix has finally unveiled its ad-supported tier. First announced in April and reiterated in June at the Cannes Advertising Festival, the new ad-supported tier will be cheaper than Netflix Basic at the cost of a bit of advertising.
We didn’t know how much it would cost or how many ads people would have to watch until today. Netflix’s "Basic with Ads" tier will be $6.99 per month in the US. Different prices will be offered in the eleven other countries where Basic with Ads will launch, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the UK.

What you save in dollars you pay in time, but Basic with Ads doesn’t sound like it’ll be any worse than watching cable TV. In fact, it sounds a lot better. People can typically expect around 15 minutes of ads per hour on cable, but Basic with Ads will only have four to five minutes of ads per hour. Ads will be 15 to 30 seconds in length and be targeted based on the genre of media being watched and the viewer’s country. In the US, advertisers will have access to Nielsen’s Digital Ad Ratings starting sometime in 2023 to determine how well they’re reaching their target audience.
Basic with Ads isn’t just a cheaper tier with ads, however. You’re also losing your ability to download titles to watch offline later. Some shows and movies won’t be available due to licensing restrictions (although Netflix says that’s something it’s "working on"), and video quality will be limited to 720p/HD.
