There are hundreds of asteroids roaming around the Earth in the solar system. Some of them are as small as a stone and some are bigger than the Moon. Most of these asteroids never come close to our planet. Those few which do are called Near-Earth objects (NEO) and are constantly monitored by scientists as they have the potential to strike the Earth someday and cause great destruction. NASA uses an infrared-based space telescope called Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to detect such objects. With the help of its advanced tech, NASA has revealed that a colossal asteroid is on its way towards Earth.
NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office has red-flagged an asteroid named Asteroid 2022 SG6 due to its extremely close approach to the planet. The asteroid will make its closest approach to Earth tomorrow, October 13, at a distance of 6 million kilometers. It is already on its way towards the planet travelling at a speed of nearly 39204 kilometers per hour! What makes this asteroid stand out from other asteroids is its humongous size. Asteroid 2022 SG6 has a width of 280 feet, which is nearly the size of a skyscraper! This asteroid has huge destructive potential due to its sheer size and speed and could potentially cause mass destruction if it deviates slightly from its path.
According to the-sky.org, the Asteroid 2022 SG6 belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. It was discovered recently on September 22. This asteroid takes 1389 days to complete one trip around the Sun during which its maximum distance from the Sun is 589 million kilometers and nearest distance is 140 million kilometers.
NASA keeps a watch on these asteroids by studying data collected by various telescopes and observatories such as the Pan-STARRS,
