Warning! Spoilers ahead for My Hero Academia chapter 356!
Under normal circumstances, a situation where My Hero Academia would allow any class 1-A student other than Deku to defeat All For One would earn an eye roll. But mangaka Kohei Horikoshi actually presented the perfect opportunity for this to happen without being cliche, and yet, chose to avoid it entirely.
Almost every shonen mangaka — including Horikoshi — is guilty of dabbling in shonen cliches to some degree, and who can blame them? This is especially the case for first-time mangaka who grew up reading manga and want to give their own spin to powerful tropes that impacted them back in the day. Of course, this is often tiresome for longtime readers who are desperate for something fresh. So, whenever these fans finally find a storyline that provides a new take on a well-known trope, it's impossible not to get excited. This excitement is much more pronounced when mangaka come up with a way to make cliches acceptable, meaning it's a letdown when they don't follow through on these «upside-down cliches.»
