Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said Nintendo isn’t ready to end fans’ wait for news about a fresh entry in the company’s flagship franchise.
In a recent interview, IGN asked why a new Mario game hadn’t been announced to coincide with this month’s opening of America’s first Super Nintendo World, or the upcoming release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
“We’re always working on Mario, so when we get to a time where we can share information, we’ll certainly do so,” Nintendo representative director Miyamoto replied.
The last new Mario experience was Bowser’s Fury, which arrived in 2021 as a short add-on adventure for Super Mario 3D World’s Nintendo Switch re-release.
A year earlier, the franchise celebrated its 35th anniversary with a series of product releases including compilation remaster package Super Mario 3D All-Stars, last-man-standing Switch Online game Super Mario 35, and Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch.
The last new mainline 3D series entry was 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey, while 2D game Super Mario Maker 2 arrived in 2019.
Miyamoto, who recently turned 70 years old, was speaking during a trip to the US to attend the grand opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood.
During the interview, he also briefly discussed his current workload and what he might be interested in taking on in the future.
“In terms of the theme park, there’s still Orlando and Singapore left, and there’s still movie work left. So, there’s a lot of things that are still left on my plate,” he said.
“On the way, if I find something new and interesting, I would love to take part in that, especially if there’s any kind of new technology. I would love to see which one of our talents would be best suited for that.”
