When the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S launched in November 2020, few anticipated the dearth of consoles that would still be ongoing into mid-2022. The Xbox just beat its own hardware sales records, in both units and dollars, passing numbers that were set over a decade ago. And according to Microsoft, the Xbox Series X/S has even outsold Sony’s PlayStation 5 for the past two fiscal quarters.
Xbox Hardware Just Had One of Its Best Months Ever
With details shared during a corporate meeting and later tweeted by Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Communication Frank X. Shaw, the Xbox Series has led market share of current-gen consoles for two quarters in a row in the US, Canada, UK, and Western Europe. While this lead does not include the Nintendo Switch, it is still noteworthy. Though Microsoft has stopped giving specific sales numbers, the PS4 far outsold the Xbox One throughout the last console generation. That trend was expected to continue with this ninth generation, and in fact the PS5 hit incredible sales figures in 2021, passing the Wii U’s lifetime sales in just one year.
