The Starbrand, Brandy Shelby, is the youngest — and potentially greatest — member of the Avengers, and she shares many similarities with Damian Wayne, the son of Batman. Both were created and developed by only one writer, which poses the question of how much this degree of creative control clashes with the long-term needs of mainstream comic companies such as Marvel or DC.
A new Starbrand was introduced recently in Avengers by writer Jason Aaron, who has been the mastermind behind Earth's Mightiest Heroes since their relaunch in 2018. This version of the character is peculiar because, unlike its previous incarnations, Brandy Shelby was an infant who was rescued by the Avengers during a mission in space. Brandy, however, has already experienced two unnatural bursts of growth, aging into a child first and then into a teenager. Brandy has even been defined by the reality-traveling Deathloks as "the greatest Avenger," meaning that Aaron clearly has big plans for her. This raises the question of what will happen to Brandy once some other writer takes over. The conundrum evokes memories of the fate of a character from DC Comics, Damian Wayne, who was similarly introduced as a child who changed Batman's status quo forever, but would be forever tied to the author who created him, Grant Morrison.
