Front Mission 1st Remake is out today on Nintendo Switch, and we’ve put together this Let’s Play video to showcase its most interesting feature.
Front Mission was released by Square Enix on the Super Famicom in 1995 and the PlayStation in 2003, and both times it was exclusive to Japan. It then received a DS release in Japan and North America in 2007.
For many, then, particularly in the west, this will be the first time they’ll be able to get their hands on the first game in the tactical RPG series.
With this in mind, developer Forever Entertainment has included two different play modes with this Switch remake, named Classic and Modern.

In our Let’s Play video above, we play through the game’s first mission in Classic mode, to show how it’s faithful to the original versions in terms of viewpoint and pacing.
We then switch to Modern mode for the second mission, to show how Forever Entertainment added new quality-of-life features and a fully controllable camera for players who may not have played the first game and don’t have any nostalgic connection to how it used to play.
Regardless of which mode is chosen, Front Mission 1st Remake is a great remake of a classic tactical RPG that should hopefully introduce it to more western players.
