After years of it being the elephant in the room, Legacies finally acknowledged that Alaric's alcohol abuse and personal issues have been a problem ever since The Vampire Diaries. As the throughline character of all three series, Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) has long been the glue that's held the Vampire Diaries universe together from a continuity standpoint. While he originally started out as a potential antagonist and Damon's reluctant frenemy, Alaric soon evolved to become an integral part of The Vampire Diaries. Now, as the headmaster of the Salvatore School in Legacies, he is responsible for overseeing a new generation of supernatural teens and continuing the legacy of the Salvatore brothers.
Despite that large burden of responsibility, Alaric hasn't at times been the most responsible headmaster or father. His courage and compassion for his students are unable to be questioned, and without his vast knowledge of supernatural creatures and mystical artifacts, it's unlikely the students would ever survive the various monsters they face. But despite his best intentions, Alaric is personally a mess and it's led to more than a few problems throughout the years. Now, Legacies has finally openly acknowledged his issues–and that it's time to deal with them.
