Reliance Jio is reportedly planning to replicate the success of its affordable JioPhone in India by bringing a budget laptop priced under $184 (approx. Rs. 15000). The device is speculated to even have an embedded 4G SIM card. The company owned by Mukesh Ambani has partnered with global giants Microsoft and Qualcomm to bring the laptop, speculated to be known as the JioBook. Reuters has cited two sources as saying that the JioBook laptop will use the chips from Qualcomm based on technology from Arm Ltd, and for software support, it will rely on the JioOS operating system and there will be Microsoft supported apps also.
The source has informed that the device will be available to customers such as schools and government institutes from this month while the enterprise customers launch will take place within the next three months.
The sources have shared that the company is aiming to sell "hundreds of thousands" of units of this budget laptop by March next year. The laptop will face stiff competition from Acer, Lenovo and Lava.
The report has quoted Counterpoint analyst Tarun Pathak as saying that the JioBook will extend the total addressable laptop market by another 15%. The company has pitched the upcoming laptop as an alternative for tablets for corporate employees who are out of the office.
Meanwhile, the company is also prepping up to launch Jio Phone 5G as an entry-level smartphone with some basic features soon. The handset is likely to come with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel featuring HD+ (1,600 x 720 pixel) resolution and a standard refresh rate of 60Hz.
