There’s only four things we know about Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. It’s open world, it’s set in a region based on Spain, it has three new starters called Quaxley, Fuecoco, and Sprigatito, and it will have some kind of battle gimmick.
Now look, we don’t know it will have a battle gimmick for certain. But there’s an undeniable pattern that’s developed over the last several generations. Mega Evolutions were introduced in X & Y, while Black & White featured triple battles and rotation battles. After that, Sun & Moon gave us Z-Moves, and of course, Sword & Shield taught us how to Dynamax and Gigantamax our Pokemon. None of these mechanics were ever reused in the next game, so we can only assume Scarlet & Violet will have a brand new battle gimmick. Maybe it’s finally time to introduce Pokemon with three types.

Adding Pokemon with three different types would complicate the game pretty dramatically. Keeping track of all the weaknesses and resistances between 18 different types is hard enough when Pokemon can only have two. Add a third, and the number of interactions that can happen increases exponentially. With three types, some Pokemon could have 8X weaknesses. A Fire, Ground, and Rock-Type would take octuple damage from a Water-type, while a Fire, Poison, and Steel-Type would have an octuple resistance
