Moonshot explores a not-so-distant future where humans are starting to populate Mars, all thanks to the work of billionaire Leon Kovi, whose actions and more are reminiscent of Elon Musk. HBO Max has been home to some popular original TV shows and movies, and one of its most recent additions is Moonshot, a sci-fi rom-com movie directed by Chris Winterbauer and starring two of the biggest stars in the rom-com genre: Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse.
Set in 2049, Moonshot follows Walt (Sprouse), a college dropout now working as a barista on his college’s campus and whose dream is to go to Mars. Walt sees an opportunity to do so thanks to the Kovi Industries Student Mars Program at this same college – unfortunately, his application has been rejected 37 times. Meanwhile, Sophie (Condor), a student at the same college, is torn between going to Mars with her boyfriend, Calvin (Mason Gooding), who moved there with his family, or staying on Earth to continue her research and more. After convincing Sophie to buy a ticket to Mars, Walt sneaks into the space shuttle and makes it to Mars, where he’s arrested and released by none other than Leon Kovi (Zach Braff), the billionaire behind the student program that rejected him so many times.

Kovi’s name is seen everywhere on campus but he doesn’t appear until the third act of Moonshot, where he reveals to Walt that he knew he had sneaked in and he had been following his every move as a security test.
