Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Inventing Anna.
Inventing Anna is a deep dive into the notorious criminal career of fraudster and con artist Anna Sorokin, also known as Anna Delvey, prompting questions of what happened to her and where she is now. Played in Inventing Anna by Julia Garner, better known as Ozark's Ruth Langmore, Anna Sorokin is a convicted scammer who briefly lived the life of a wealthy socialite named Anna Delvey. In 2013, when Anna was just 22 years old, she became an intern for Purple magazine in Paris, which was when she adopted the pseudonym Anna Delvey, starting Sorokin on the path that would later land her in prison.
Under the guise of raising money for the “Anna Delvey Foundation,” the Russian-born Sorokin, who had recently moved to New York City, posed as a German heiress named Anna Delvey and swindled more than $200,000 from various banks, hotels, institutions, and other socialites. In the process, Sorokin falsified bank statements to back her claims of having access to millions of dollars in Swiss bank accounts, and racked up thousands of dollars in hotel bills and private debts. It's not surprising that Delvey's case was picked up by Netflix, as it reads somewhat like the origin story of a Bond Girl. «Anna Delvey» was arrested in a sting operation in 2017, jailed on Rikers Island for two years, and was tried by a Manhattan court on March 20, 2019. She was found guilty of several counts of grand larceny in the second degree, attempted grand larceny, and theft of services, resulting in a sentence of 4-12 years in prison, a fine of $24,000, and an order to pay around $200,000 in restitution to her victims. On February 2021, Sorokin was released on parole.
