The universe of Hyper Light Drifter, which currently includes the Zelda-like of the same name and last year's Solar Ash, will be getting a new addition in the form of Hyper Light Breaker. While Solar Ash was not a direct sequel to Hyper Light Drifter, it was confirmed by developer Heart Machine that it takes place in the same fictional universe, laying the groundwork for more spin-off titles.
Hyper Light Drifter was released back in 2016 to critical acclaim. Game critics and consumers alike were enthralled by its arresting visuals, satisfying gameplay mechanics, and retro-fusion soundtrack. The game adopted a pixelated art style and top-down perspective reminiscent of 90s RPGs and action games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The game is centered around the fundamentals of exploration and combat, though its unique aesthetic is also what many fans remember most about it. Surprisingly, this aesthetic was greatly changed in the gorgeous Solar Ash, despite the two titles sharing the same universe.

Now that this precedent has been set with Solar Ash, Heart Machine is adding a new game to this universe: Hyper Light Breaker. A trailer from the newly formed Hyper Light Breaker YouTube channel shows off a little bit of what this game is about. Though most of the video is an animation of what can be assumed to be the protagonist fighting a group of enemies, the trailer ends with a quick shot of the game's 3D world, suggesting that Hyper Light Breaker will have a similar camera orientation and visual style as Solar Ash.
