The best plot for Charlie and Valentina in How I Met Your Father season 2 would revisit (and revise) Lily and Marshall’s season 2 exploits on How I Met Your Mother. Like any spinoff series, How I Met Your Father has needed to take care when it comes to referencing its predecessor, How I Met Your Mother. The earlier series was a beloved sitcom and has inspired some of How I Met Your Father’s best gags and plot twists, but copying its formula too closely could leave the new show feeling like a retread of the '00s hit.
To this end, How I Met Your Father dropped one of How I Met Your Mother’s most ingenious tricks by not letting the heroine’s perspective color the show’s reality. How I Met Your Father also avoided some of the earlier show’s most memorable locations and, most impressively, managed to avoid any major cast cameos from its predecessor until the season 1 finale. This approach allowed How I Met Your Father to emerge from How I Met Your Mother’s sizable shadow and succeed on its own merits despite a shaky start and a pilot that earned some brutal reviews upon the show's initial release.
