Horizon Forbidden West is a direct sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. So, the story follows directly with many recurring themes, characters, and plot lines. In addition to new weapons and combat mechanics, Horizon Forbidden West revisits the world of franchise protagonist, Aloy, as she navigates the second installment in the series.

The Horizon games take place on a post-apocalyptic Earth in the 31st century, following a mass extinction event that wiped out all life on the planet. In brief, this apocalypse started in the 21st century and was caused by climate crises and killer robots, known as the Faro Plague. The Earth was detoxified and repopulated thanks to the efforts of Dr. Elisabet Sobeck, who engineered Project Zero Dawn to restore the planet after the fall of humanity under the AI: GAIA.

The story of Horizon Forbidden West continues directly on from Zero Dawn as Aloy leaves after the conclusive battle at Meridian and defeat of HADES (the function-turned-AI intent on wiping out all life on earth). HADES represents one of several subordinate functions that Aloy needs to find in Horizon Forbidden West. Players quickly learn that Aloy has spent six months traveling in search of a backup for GAIA. It seems that in light of everything that Aloy learned about herself in Horizon Zero Dawn, she recognizes her importance as the only person that can save the world.
