Sonic Origins is the latest collection of the classic Sonic titles, compiling Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The new release abandons the standard emulation of past ports in favor of accurately rebuilding all of the games within the Retro Engine, along with a new coin system in its Anniversary mode and other changes such as the addition of the drop dash.
A Mission mode happens to be one of the new features in Sonic Origins. This mode takes players through uniquely designed courses based on various zones from each of the Sonic games featured within the compilation.
How the Sonic Origins Mission mode worksMissions are separated by tiers, with each game having its own set of missions and progression. These can range anywhere from asking you to complete a level within a time limit to dodging enemies while reaching the goal with no rings on your person. From the start, each game only offers three one-star missions. If you own the Digital Deluxe Edition, each game immediately provides access to a few exclusive five-star missions labeled as “extreme” difficulty.
You only need to complete one mission within each tier to unlock the following difficulty tier, with a ceiling of five tiers indicated by the number of stars on the mission select screen. This means you can unlock every available mission by only completing a handful of prerequisites.
Each mission offers five total grades, with the C-rank being the lowest and S-rank being the highest achievable grade. This is one of many ways to amass coins for use in the Sonic Origins museum.
