House of the Dragon: Who is Corlys Velaryon?
House of the Dragon premiered last weekend with some brutal action sequences, an intriguing storyline, and plenty of new characters. One of the new players in this Game of Thrones prequel is Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Head of House Velaryon. Corlys is also called «The Sea Snake» thanks to his reputation as the best sailor and explorer in Westeros.
Not only is Corlys the wealthiest man in Westeros, but he is also one of the most powerful. He commands the biggest navy worldwide, which is why he is the Master of Ships on the Council led by King Viserys I Targaryen. Corlys is portrayed by Steve Toussaint as a ruler of brutal honesty and principle.
House Of The Dragon Officially Renewed For Season 2
House of the Dragon is partly based on George R. R. Martin's novel about the Targaryen family, Fire & Blood, from the series A Song of Ice and Fire. The novel goes into detail on Corlys' history involving the ships he obtained, the long voyages he traveled, and the riches he brought back to his household. The treasures he collected included gold, silk, spices, animals, and other valuables. While the show will mostly focus on the Targaryen dynasty, perhaps a couple of episodes this season could unveil some info on Corlys' adventures and how he became the richest man in Westeros (even more than the Lannister family).
There have been several criticisms regarding the casting of a black man as Corlys on the show considering the character is white in the books. However, these negative remarks are invalid because other adaptations and/or versions of beloved fantasy stories such as the upcoming Amazon series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Denis Villeneuve's Dune film, both contain people of color in certain roles.
