High on Life and Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland facing domestic violence charges
Rick and Morty and High on Life creator Justin Roiland has been charged with felony domestic violence in California.
According to NBC News, he’s been charged with one count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit.
The charges are in connection with a 2020 incident involving a woman Roiland was dating.
Roiland was reportedly arrested and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020 and arraigned in October 2020.
Having pleaded not guilty to the charges at the time, he appeared in court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing. A trial date has not yet been set.
“We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible,” one of Roiland’s attorneys said in a statement.
A protective order filed against Roiland in October 2020 ordered him to stay at least 100 feet away from his accuser and not to harass, threaten or surveil them.
He was also ordered to hand over any firearms he owned or possessed to police until at least October 2023.
Roiland is best known as the co-creator and star of the popular adult animated comedy TV series Rick and Morty.
He is also the co-founder and CEO of Squanch Games, the studio behind the comedic first-person shooter High on Life, which was released for PC and Xbox in December.
At launch the game was made available on Xbox Game Pass and it broke several notable engagement records. According to the Microsoft, it was the subscription service’s biggest launch of 2022, the biggest third-party launch of all time, and the biggest release of a single player-only game.
