Warning! Spoilers ahead for Halo episode 1.
While Halo's premiere episode features a Master Chief helmet reveal that's bound to be controversial, the largest complaints are blinded by nostalgiaand the experiences from the video games. While Master Chief's face is almost always hidden from players throughout the game franchise, Pablo Schreiber's Master Chief removes his helmet and shows his face in the new Paramount+ series. However, this shouldn't be as egregious or shocking as some viewers are making it out to be.
In the first episode of Halo, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 leads Silver Team as they fight back against Covenant forces who've attacked a colony on the world of Madrigal. While the team of UNSC SPARTANs managed to secure a mysterious and powerful artifact the Covenant was hoping to obtain in the aftermath, Master Chief's physical contact with the object led to the restoration of some of his childhood memories, which had been erased by the SPARTAN program's Doctor Catherine Halsey. As such, John-117 was motivated to defy his orders to kill the lone survivor of Madrigal (an insurrectionist named Kwan).

During this time in the first Halo episode, Kawn managed to pull a rifle on Master Chief. In response, John-117 removes his helmet to gain her trust, having decided to protect her from the UNSC. As such, Master's Chief face is seen quite clearly for the rest of the episode, serving as one of the longest durations Master Chief has ever been without his helmet on-screen (including in the games).
