Grand Theft Auto fans, rejoice! Rockstar Games confirms that a new game in the GTA series is in the works.
The studio didn’t name-drop GTA VI specifically. In an announcement, Rockstar Games wrote: “With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.
“With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway," the developer added.
The “well underway” statement will definitely excite fans, who’ve been waiting years for a new game. The last entry in the franchise, GTA V, released nearly a decade ago in September 2013.
Since then, Rockstar Games has focused its efforts on Red Dead Redemption 2 and the multiplayer GTA online. At the same time, it's been porting and updating older Grand Theft Auto games to new platforms, which has frustrated fans hoping for a new version of the game.
Friday’s post from Rockstar Games hints at why a new GTA hasn’t arrived yet. The developer doesn’t want the next game to simply be a retread with better graphics. Instead, it's promising a leap in the GTA experience.
But if you’re hoping for more details on the next GTA game, you’ll have to wait. “We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready,” Rockstar Games said without elaborating. In the meantime, one analyst predicts GTA VI might not arrive until 2024.
