Fortnite has become the first free-to-play title available on Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Players can stream the game on a phone, tablet or PC without having to subscribe to Xbox Gold or Xbox Game Pass.
This also gives players another way to play the game on iPhone or iPad, despite the fact it was removed from the Apple App Store in 2020.
In a new post on the official Xbox Wire blog, Xbox Cloud Gaming vice president and head of product Catherine Gluckstein called the addition of Fortnite a “key milestone”.
“Today we reach another key milestone as we expand our business model to make cloud available to more people in even more ways, going beyond Xbox Game Pass to provide our first free-to-play title,” Gluckstein said.
“In partnership with Epic, Fortnite is available via Xbox Cloud Gaming so fans can play on an iOS device, Android phone or tablet, or Windows PC through web browser.
“This is just the beginning for us – we’re going to learn, implement feedback, and in time look to bring even more free-to-play titles to players through the cloud.”
Gluckstein also stated that since the Xbox Cloud Gaming beta launched in 2020, more than 10 million people have streamed games through it as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Arguably the most notable element of this news is that it gives players a way to play Fortnite on iOS devices.
Epic and Apple have been locked in a legal battle ever since August 2020, after Epic moved to circumvent Apple’s platform fees with a new direct payment option in Fortnite, leading to the game’s removal from the App Store and the termination of Epic’s developer account.
