Nobody likes to wait around for a game to load. Loading screens are something gamers have learnt to put up with over the years, but nowadays, technology has advanced enough to make them practically a non-issue. Devs are now seeking ways to significantly improve loading times for their games, including Luminous Productions, developers of Final Fantasy 15 and the team behind Square Enix's upcoming RPG Forspoken.
Luminous recently uploaded a video to its official YouTube channel (thanks, TheVerge) which details the technology behind Forspoken that was announced by AMD and Microsoft at this year’s GDC convention - that’s Game Developers Conference for those unaware. With AMD’s FidelityFX, players will be able to experience enhanced visuals with features like ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, denoiser, and variable shading.

But it’s Microsoft's new DirectStorage M.2 SSD that makes the real magic happen. Luminous’ video has a pretty amazing segment showing the difference in loading times, with the M.2 SSD allowing Forspoken to load in just 1.7 seconds compared to 3.2 with the SATA SSD and 19.9 seconds with the regular HDD. The video in question is linked below, so you can see for yourself, but this new tech almost completely eradicates loading times on PC and PS5.
Unfortunately, it’s going to be a little bit of a wait before we can actually get our hands on Forspoken though. The game was originally supposed to launch on May 25, but a lengthy delay has pushed it back to October 11.
