Square Enix has finally got everyone talking about Forspoken but only because of how cheesy its now trailer is.
It’s never easy to try and launch a new franchise but so far Square Enix has been making a bit of a hash of Forspoken. The gameplay reveals so far have been underwhelming and there’s been criticism that the main character, who is from the present day real world, relies too much on stereotypes.
The new trailer below, which only seems to have been released on Twitter, plays up the fact that protagonist Frey Holland is from modern Earth but in a way most fans have found hilariously cringey.
The delivery of the line, ‘Yeah, okay, that is something I do now’, when referring to wielding magic, has been the subject of the most amount of mockery, with fans reusing the line to promote other famous games, from God Of War to Bloodborne.
The trailer has inspired a host of parodies, written in the same obnoxious style that many have compared to disgraced Buffy the Vampire Killer creator Joss Whedon.
Unfortunately, most of the parodies insist on copying the original post into the same tweet although what ‘sensitive content’ it includes we’re still not sure.
Voice actor SungWon Cho, aka ProZD, has put out one of the funniest parodies so far, starting with Super Mario Odyssey, and then moving on to Animal Crossing and Danganronpa.
The one by bobvids, based on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, has had even more effort put into it, although it barely seems even more self-aware than the original.
Perhaps Square Enix will try to convince themselves that this is all good publicity but it’s very reminiscent of Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, which also featured characters speaking very contemporary sounding dialogue in a fantasy setting.
