Former Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aimé says he wishes he could monetize his island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Fans of the game are no strangers to spending many hundreds of hours building their own custom islands in Animal Crossing. Sharing these islands with their friends is a significant appeal to many, and most players simply do this for fun. It may be a surprise to hear the idea of monetizing such creations, especially coming from the former Nintendo president.
Reggie Fils-Aimé is well known for arguably being the face of Nintendo for over a decade. He acted as president of Nintendo of America from 2006 to 2019 and was a major component in the company's direction during that time. In April of 2019, Fils-Aimé stepped down as president after spending 15 years with the company. Animal Crossing: New Horizons wasreleased less than a year after his retirement, to critical and commercial success, quickly catapulting to one of the best-selling games on Nintendo Switch and in the series. Alongside this success came the onset of NFTs and cryptocurrency as monetization within digital spaces rose to the forefront of tech.

Zack Zwiezen of Kotaku reported that Fils-Aimé expressed his interest in selling his island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. His overarching point was that he is in support of «play to own» within games. Not only did the former Nintendo president say that he would like to sell the island, but he would like to monetize it further beyond just selling it.
