In its first major update of 2022, Microsoft Windows 11 will finally allow third-party developers to publish widgets in Microsoft Store. The update, which has been given the codename of Sun Valley 2 might be released in July 2022 to mark the one year anniversary of Windows 11.
While the update also brings an array of upgrades and new features, the most talked about them all has been third-party widgets. This information was brought forth by the official Twitter account of FireCube Studios. Highlighting the details about the update, the tweet read, “Information about third party widgets, publishing widgets and more. Looks like Microsoft is soon going to announce third party widgets officially.”
Widgets have always been an area of high potential for Microsoft. But so far, Microsoft Windows 11 only supports widgets made by the company. At the moment, the available Widgets in Windows 11 include weather, news and traffic apart from general interest functions such as showing items from Outlook, Photo gallery and to-do list.
But with this new update, widgets could become far more useful and users can have a larger selection to pick their favorite ones. Further, this will give the entire developers community a new boost as they will be able to build custom widgets based on different segments of users.
Apart from that, Microsoft Windows 11 update will also see some quality of life changes such as drag and drop support for taskbar and the ability to lock the taskbar to different sides of the screen. At present the taskbar is locked to the bottom of the screen and cannot be moved elsewhere, which has been a complaint from many users. With this new update, it seems Microsoft is listening to the feedback.
