Firegirl: Hack 'n Splash Rescue DX has an easy-to-understand upgrade system for a roguelike. Players will go on missions and based on how they do, they’ll get money for their job. Even if they die, some sort of monetary value will be given to players. Also in death, all rescued citizens will remain rescued.

At first, players can only upgrade three things with their equipment. Eventually, players will start to rescue key citizens who will unlock new ways to upgrade the titular Firegirl and her department. The water supply makes it easier to extinguish fires since they will have more water on hand while the pressure gives that burst of water a bigger arc.
It also helps with pressurized jumping, making it easier to platform around environments. Players should only put one rank each into these two upgrade stations at first but keep coming back after a certain NPC vendor is unlocked.
The only other thing players can upgrade right away is armor. Players might miss this area of the firehouse instinctually because this is a 2D game. They are programmed to go left to right in one of these types of experiences. However, at the starting position, which is in an alleyway, players can turn around and enter the armor shop.
