The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s recently hinted the third installment will share a naming theme with its processors. After a long wait, Square Enix finally revealed the second chapter in its retelling of the iconic 1997 JRPG Final Fantasy 7, which will release sometime next year on the PlayStation 5 under the name Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This altered subtitle was just as surprising as the main announcement, with many assuming the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake game would simply be named Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 before its official reveal during June's Final Fantasy 7 Anniversary Celebration livestream.
However, there may be a good reason for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s unique title, as the conclusion to 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake featured a timeline-bending twist that radically altered the events of the original Final Fantasy 7. The subtitle “Rebirth” also hints certain characters who died in the old Final Fantasy 7 storyline could be resurrected during the events of the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel — with both the first game and its later INTERmission DLC teasing the surprise return of a particular fan-favorite from the larger Final Fantasy 7 universe. Whatever the reason for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s new title, it has been confirmed the still-to-come third installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will continue a certain trend with its own name.
