Players will be able to jump right into the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without playing Final Fantasy VII Remake or even the original Final Fantasy VII. The long-awaited, multi-part retelling of the beloved 1997 JRPG finally saw its first installment released in 2020, with Final Fantasy VII Remake covering the original’s opening chapters in the cyberpunk city of Midgar. Aside from re-imaging the story of Cloud Strife and the rag-tag crew of Team AVALANCHE as they rebelled against the corrupt Shinra Electric Power Company, Final Fantasy VII Remake greatly expanded on the tale that PlayStation gamers of the late 90s fell in love with — and even ended with a shocking twist that completely turned the Final Fantasy VII mythos on its head.
Fans will get to see what comes of this twist sooner rather than later, as Square Enix recently announced the second chapter of this new Final Fantasy VII storyline, now titled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, during the recent Final Fantasy 7 Anniversary Celebration livestream earlier this week. Set to release in the winter of 2023, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will pick up where Final Fantasy VII Remake and its Intermission DLC left off and include a retelling of the infamous Nibelheim Incident that serves as the crux of Cloud's rivalry with the renegade SOLDIER Sephiroth. Even better, the yet-unnamed third installment of the new Final Fantasy VII trilogy is already in development, meaning that fans won’t have to wait very long to see how the epic storyline concludes.
