FIFA 22 is getting cross-play but only for next gen friendlies
EA has announced plans to start testing cross-play between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S but the options are going to be very limited.
Although cross-play – the ability to play the same game with people on a different format – has become a lot more commonplace in recent years it’s far from ubiquitous and even super popular games like FIFA don’t have it… yet.
EA has announced that cross-play will be available in ‘the near future’ but only for a limited number of modes and not for FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT).
Not all formats will be able to play together either, as the initial test will only cover Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Stadia – so not Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
The only modes you’ll be able to use cross-play with will be online seasons and online friendlies, so this really is just a technical test and not a feature EA intends to have working in full until its next game.
‘While we want to enable our players to play with as many friends and others as possible, we limited the test to these two modes with the aim of reducing the chance for introducing new issues into the game,’ reads the official FAQ.
‘We are confident that the game data and feedback that we get from these two modes will help inform how cross-play could further be implemented in future titles.’
Most importantly for some, there will be an option to turn off cross-play if you don’t want to use it. Although this is usually only deemed a problem when playing PC gamers, since their format is easier to install cheats on.
The implication is that this year’s FIFA 23 will include the option for all formats and modes, although the FAQ only refers vaguely to ‘future titles’.
