An animator who knows nothing about Fire Emblem ventured to Reddit to answer Fire Emblem-related questions, and they got a surprising amount of them right. Fire Emblem is a tactical fantasy JRPG that made its first debut in Japan in 1990 for the Famicom, currently with over fifteen core games, several remakes, and two spin-offs such as the recently launched Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. Fire Emblem is known for its challenging gameplay, but also the often extravagant characters and storylines.
The Fire Emblem series is often remembered for the mechanic where individual characters can be permanently lost when they lose all their health in battle. This is why the series tends to put extra effort into ensuring the characters and plots are memorable because having a large cast of likable characters means that any losses could have an emotional impact on the player. As more games were made, this led to a long list of characters with more dramatic personalities, appearances, and backstories to stand out from an already large cast. For example, while there are more humble characters like Will who are fighting to protect their friends, more recent games have characters like Byleth — who's also playable in Super Smash Bros., possesses time travel powers, and a sword made from magic bones.
