Euphoria's Eric Dane says that this isn’t the end of Cal’s story. Introduced in the first episode of the HBO teen drama, Cal Jacobs (Dane) is initially introduced as a lonely and predatory man that hooks up with younger partners in motel rooms. This routine leads him into an awkward encounter with another main character, Jules (Hunter Schafer), which connects Cal and his family to the main story of Euphoria. As the season progresses, and as Jules tells Rue (Zendaya) about her night with Cal, he seems shaken and claims not to have known that Jules is underage. This is at odds with the rest of Cal’s behavior, as he’s regularly recorded his motel hook-ups.
This thread continues into Euphoria season 2, which attempts to show a more sympathetic side to Cal. Beginning to unravel at the possibility that his secret will be revealed, flashbacks show that Cal once had romantic feelings for his male best friend. But as a teenager with a cold father, and afraid to express his sexuality, Cal never comes out. It’s a regret that eats at Cal, culminating in an explosive end to Euphoria season 2, episode 4, as Cal returns home drunk. He pees on the floor of his home and tells his horrified family, including his wife Marsha (Paula Marshall) and his son Nate (Jacob Elordi), that he’s cheated with several men. In fact, he notes, before stumbling out of the house, he first slept with a man when Marsha was pregnant with their first son.
