Lin-Manuel Miranda explains his decision not to submit Encanto's hit song «We Don't Talk About Bruno» for consideration at the Academy Awards. Directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Charise Castro, Encanto premiered in November 2021 for a brief theatrical run and was later released on Disney+ on December 24. Its original score was composed by Germaine Franco while Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the film's original songs. The animated musical comedy tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz), a Colombian teenager who must overcome her family's expectations as the only Madrigal without a magical gift.
Although Encanto had underwhelming box-office numbers, the animated film quickly gained popularity after its Disney+ release. Encanto's soundtrackhas spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and while all of the film's original songs found a place on Billboard's charts, the song «We Don't Talk About Bruno,» in which the Madrigals describe their estranged uncle Bruno to Mirabel, has become a viral hit. Yet, despite the song's immense popularity, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" wasn't included in Encanto's three Oscar nominations because Miranda submitted the lyrical «Dos Oruguitas» for the Academy's consideration instead.
