Business communications are no longer all business. There are so many ways to talk to colleagues, and some of them (Slack, for one) are naturally more casual than others. Add in the use of emoji, and maybe the overuse of punctuation, and it could lead to some unpleasant or at least misconstrued interactions.
Skynova surveyed 1,000 employees and supervisors for their opinions on emoji, slang, and punctuation in the workplace(Opens in a new window) and found that a few things just don’t translate between management and employees or across generational divides.
And even though managers are five times more likely to use emoji than non-managers, they said that using the devil, profanity, kissing, skull and crossbones, and pile of poop emoji could result in termination.
One of the most unifying findings, though, was that 75% of those surveyed said instant-messaging platforms like Slack have let employees communicate in a more informal way—and 59% were in favor of the change.
