TheNew York Times recently featured a classic Dungeons and Dragons class as one of the answers to its crossword, coming as a surprise to D&D fans. While crossword puzzles dipping into popular culture for their clues and answers is nothing new, seeing Dungeons and Dragons feature in one is a fun nod to the growing popularity of the D&D franchise.
Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most successful tabletop RPGs in history, and it is only getting more attention. From its release in the mid-70s, its fanbase has been dedicated to the game across all of its different versions. More recently, a surge of popularity began with the advent of podcasts such as Critical Role, Dimension 20, andAdventure Zone. The creativity these groups have shines in the systems D&D has, reaching millions of viewers with every episode.

One of the original classes from D&D appearing as an answer in the New York Times crossword puzzle demonstrates just how popular the game now is. While non-fans would maybe be left guessing with the clue, "One of a character class in Dungeons and Dragons," as to which one it could be, those familiar withD&D probably had little trouble. Ultimately the answer turned out to be one of the most iconic classes in D&D: the Cleric, as revealed by NYTCrossword.
