Vocations in Dragon's Dogma are broken into three basic categories: Fighter, Strider, and Mage. The Fighter category focuses on melee combat and allows players to use swords and shields. The Strider mixes daggers and bows and exchanges the extra defense of the Fighter for more speed and agility. The final basic vocation, the Mage, wields a staff and conjures magic to target enemies and heal Dragon's Dogma's pawns.
As players level up and improve their skills, they can unlock advanced vocations in the game: Warrior, Ranger, or Sorcerer. These are associated with the Fighter, Strider, and Mage vocations, respectively, and they open up new and more powerful weapons, skills, and augments.
As well as these advanced vocations, players can also unlock hybrids that combine the benefits of two other vocations.
