Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons has been revealed by developer Secret Base and publisher Modus Games, offering a throwback to sidescrolling beat-em ups. It will be releasing this summer for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Switch, but an exact date has not been given.
The story description reads, “Prepare to throw down the Double Dragon way in this fresh addition to the iconic beat ‘em up franchise. It’s the year 199X, and nuclear war has devastated New York City leaving its citizens to fight for survival as riots and crime engulf the streets. The city has been overtaken by criminal gangs who terrorize its ruins as they fight for total dominance. Unwilling to endure these conditions any longer, young Billy and Jimmy Lee take it upon themselves to drive the gangs out of their city.”
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will have 13 playable characters, with players able to pick two of them when playing through levels. You can switch between these two whenever you wish. There are roguelite elements in play too with players able to choose the order of missions which will impact the length of each, the difficulty, and the number of enemies. There will be randomised upgrades at the end of each of the missions to improve characters, but you can also choose to use the acquired cash to revive characters. Modifiers such as permanent death or infinite mode can also be used. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will have two player local co-op too.
